Temple Grandin, the world’s most well known Autistic advocate helped us launch The Autism Show Podcast with an interview.
Temple Grandin is an author, professor, highly regarded animal scientist and one of Time Magazine’s top 100 most influential people in the world.
No one has increased society’s appreciation of the unique and positive characteristics of the autistic mind as much as Temple. And that’s what we are all about at the Autism Show Podcast.
Here is a bit of what Temple had to say…
What moments inspire you to continue your work as an autism activist?
It inspires me to hear parents say that their kid goes to college now or that I really helped them inspire their kid.
What is one thing that concerns you about the autism community today?
It’s important for people with autism to get out into the world. There’s a tendency to overprotect. Sometimes moms do all the talking for the kids, but these kids also need to learn basic skills.
What’s an autism resource that you share with parents and educators?
I would say if you’re a parent of a newly diagnosed child, join your local support group and network with other parents in person.
The Autism Society of America has different chapters in different cities. You can type your city in Google to find your local autism resource center.
What are you currently working on for the autism community?
Well, I just released my new book last year, The Autistic Brain. This book emphasizes the need for building up the areas of strength rather than focusing on deficits.
I also have a new edition of my book, The Way I See It. In The Way I See It, I give both my experiences as a person with autism, and as a scientist, to provide practical advice for teaching and raising children with autism or Asperger’s.
